The Hindus celebrate it because on this day, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after an exile of fourteen years and after defeating the cruel demon king, Ravana.

In view of his victorious return, the people illuminated their houses in Ayodhya. It is said that since then the people of India have been celebrating this festival of lights with great enthusiasm.

On this day, the markets are decorated like a bride. They wear a wonderful festive look. Wherever we go, we see colourful balloons and bunting. There is a great rush particularly at sweet shops.

The children get new clothes and toys on this day. All the people buy candles and crackers. The houses are cleaned and whitewashed days before the festival.

At night, the houses are illuminated with candles, earthen lamps and electric lamps. Wherever we move our eyes as we stand on the roofs of our houses, we find rows of these lamps and candles.

Many people fire crackers on this day, particularly at night. These crackers pollute the atmosphere and are also dangerous if the children hold them in their hands.

It is a pity that some people gamble and drink excessively on this day. Such people start quarrelling among themselves or pick a quarrel with others. This bad habit of drinking and gam­bling should be given up.

Let us celebrate the day in a proper way as it deserves. It is heartening that people of all communities meet one another and exchange greetings and sweets on this holy day.
